Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
U.S. citizens, green card holders, and U.S. residents are required to file annual U.S. tax returns and report their worldwide income, regardless of where they live.
Non-U.S. citizens may also be required to file U.S. tax returns if they earn income from U.S. sources.
If you were required to file but did not do so, it is generally advisable to complete and submit the missing returns as soon as possible. A consultation with a U.S. tax expert is strongly recommended to evaluate your specific situation and available compliance options.
U.S. tax reporting obligations include filing with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and, in many cases, U.S. state tax authorities.
- The standard federal filing deadline is April 15 of the year following the tax year (e.g., 2025 returns are due April 15, 2026).
- An automatic six-month extension may be requested for additional time to prepare the return.
- U.S. citizens living outside the U.S. generally receive an automatic extension until June 15, with possible further extensions in certain cases.
Extensions apply to filing, not to tax payment obligations—estimated taxes must still be paid on time to avoid penalties and interest.
Both Israel and the United States allow foreign tax credits for taxes paid abroad. In most situations, double taxation can be avoided, and ultimately the higher of the two tax liabilities applies.
However, because tax laws do not always align perfectly, there are cases where double taxation exposure may arise. Advance tax planning is often essential to minimize or prevent this risk.
U.S. citizens are required to file annual U.S. tax returns and FBAR reports, regardless of where they live.
U.S. citizens residing outside the U.S. who have never filed may be eligible for the Streamlined Filing Compliance Procedures, a voluntary disclosure program allowing taxpayers to:
- File U.S. tax returns for the last three years.
- File FBAR reports for the last six years.
- Resolve non-compliance without penalties, subject to meeting the Streamlined Offshore Procedure requirements.
Professional guidance is highly recommended to ensure proper compliance and successful handling of any tax matter. It is important to have specific professional consultation relevant to your specific facts and circumstances.
